Experience Homelessness for a Night

As Thanksgiving approaches we loosen our belts and our wallets in preparation for the coming feasts.

Thanksgiving is a season of fullness.  On Thursday we fill our stomachs, and on Black Friday, we fill our ‘sleighs’ with toys and presents.

But for more than 2,000 individuals in Snohomish County, this is not a season of fullness; these individuals have labeled themselves as homeless.

Pointe of Grace invites the public to join them in the second Compassion in the Cold event, an immersion experience in homelessness and poverty, as they acknowledge this reality in the suburban context.

On Friday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m., the public is invited to Pointe of Grace, 5425 Harbour Pointe Bldv., in Mukilteo, to participate in an open discussion with the mayor of Mukilteo, Joe Marine.

Following the discussion, participants will have an opportunity to experience first-hand the difficulties presented by a lack of shelter by spending the night in their cars, cardboard boxes, tarps or tents.  Come for an hour or two, or for the entire night.

The event will also sponsor a donation drive to help support the Emergency Cold Weather Shelter, a ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood.

The following items may be donated at the event:

• warm socks (wool, or wool blend)
• hotel-sized toiletry items
• packets of hot cocoa, cider or coffee
• creamy peanut butter
• cans of Tuna
• sturdy paper plates

• 8 oz. cups for hot drinks

Pointe of Grace is partnering with other community groups to provide a safe awareness experience and donation drive.

Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided from 6-7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Nov. 26.

If you or your group are interested in participating in this free event, please contact Kelsey Plummer at 425-263-8730 or kelsey@trinitylutheranchurch.com.
